How to Know If Your Child Is Ready to Start Coding
Many parents assume coding is something kids should start only once they're "good at math" or already comfortable with computers. In reality, the best predictor of readiness isn't math skills — it's curiosity. If your child enjoys puzzles, asks "why" a lot, or likes building things (with blocks, Lego, or even just stories), they already have the mindset that makes a great young coder. Programming is really just structured problem-solving, and most kids develop that instinct well before they can do long division. At Kytocode, we usually recommend starting between ages 7-9 with visual, block-based tools like Scratch, which teach programming logic without requiring reading fluency in a coding language. By age 10-12, most kids are ready to transition into real syntax-based languages like Python. The most important thing isn't age — it's whether learning feels like play, not homework. If a child is frustrated rather than curious, it's worth slowing down rather than pushing forward.
